In December 2024, at 96, Wilbert Pfeifer (Willie) saw the completion and placement of a 2-story metal fabrication of his sculpture on the Fort Hays State University (FHSU) campus in Hays, Kansas.
Wilbert’s first exhibition was sponsored by the Hays Arts Council in 1970 and included 47 pieces. In 1971, Pfeifer was invited to exhibit work in the Oakbrook Center Invitational Crafts Exhibition co-sponsored by Northern Illinois University Art Department. Both shows were juried, and Wilbert received honorable mention at the Chicago show from the University.
A retrospective exhibition of his art, Fascinating Forms III, opened August 22nd and 23rd, 2025, at Toby Ironworks Gallery, 708 Main Street, Hays, Kansas.
“Fascinating Forms III: Six Decades of Sculpture in Wood and Metal” exhibition featured the work of Hays artist Wilbert Pfeifer and collaborations with Tobias (Toby) Flores, FHSU associate professor of sculpture, who created metal casting of Willie’s designs. Wilbert’s two earlier one person shows, Fascinating Forms I & II, were at Fort Hays State University’s Taylor Gallery.
Starting in 1964, Wilbert applied his carpentry and imaginative design talents to creating stunning abstract sculptures enhanced with beautiful wood grains that inspire and transform spaces.
Willie also began experimenting with puzzles that utilized all parts of the wood block he started with. Some of the puzzles contain multiple sculptures and are quite challenging to put together.
When asked about his training or studies, Wilbert said he had two grade school teachers who recognized his talent. One gave him materials to take home. Doodles or sketches of an inspired shape began his creative process. For this self-taught artist the fun was in cutting intricate curves that challenged his skills with the saw. Willie appreciated Alexander Calder’s work. Some saw or experienced similarity to Matisse‘s paper Cut-Outs.
Wilbert captured flow in 3-D.
Willie owned the Hays Planing Mill from 1957 until 1993 creating beautiful, elegant, and functional interiors in homes, businesses, and churches throughout the area. As an active leader of many organizations, Willie also dedicated his life to making the community a better place for those who called Ellis County home.
Wilbert has work in the Hadley Foundation Art Collection, Fort Hays State University Moss Thorns Gallery of Art Permanent Collection, the Hays Arts Council Collection, and Grassroots Art Center Collection.

"All you have to do is think three, four, and five dimensional."
